Mid-Atlantic Region Annual Metting
September 28-29, 2009

The Mid-Atlantic Region annual meeting will be held September 28 (beginning promptly at 1:00 p.m., and will adjourn at 12 noon on September 29.  The meeting this year will include a unique program, planned to be of interest and value to persons in CPE as supervisors and as supervisory education students, as well as to professional chaplains in the practice of clinical ministry.

The lead presentation will feature Cathy Hasty, a CPE Supervisor at Novant Health in Charlotte.  The theme will be, Claiming Who We Are: The Language of Faith in Pastoral Care.  She will be joined by a panel of three who will work with Cathy in a unique sharing out of their experiences in pastoral care and clinical pastoral education.  Ted Asfaw (CPE Supervisor at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital), Mildred Best (CPE Supervisor at UVA Hospital), and Jeanell Cox Ingram (APC Board Certified Chaplain at Johnson Memorial Hospital) will be the panelists.

This part of the afternoon program will be a re-visitation of a well-worn concept in pastoral care and education, namely, theological reflection.  Cathy will lead us in addressing the ancient texts of faith and explore their relevance to our personal pilgrimage and our ministries.  She presented the method which she has been employing for several years in her own life and work  in the NC/WV sub region “webinar” which was conducted back in April.  She will take this a step further and engage the panelists as they bring their own experiences and perspectives into the discussion.  It promises to be a rich time of reflection and dialogue for all attendees.

The second half of the afternoon will feature several concurrent breakout sessions.  These will be more informal small group gatherings with leaders who will address a particular topic and engage the participants in a time of discussion and learning.  Jan Humphreys will explore the challenges and opportunities of a community based CPE program such as her Caring Community Ministry program.  Jane Litzinger will review and discuss the primary issues addressed in recent supervisory CPE curriculum summits in which she participated, along with persons from around the country.  David Franzen’s breakout session will have a more specific focus as he leads a discussion on “The Setting in Pastoral Care and Counseling.”  John Oliver will share out of his experience of supervising military chaplains off site, utilizing teleconferencing for some of his supervision.  Deborah Whisnand, Director of FCPE, will address issues related to the work of FCPE and its relation to ACPE and the regions.  Bill Scrivener, ACPE President, will lead a discussion on the report of a Task Group’s study of the organizational structure of ACPE.
